Labrador Retrievers come in three colours
  Black, Yellow and Chocolate

March 29, 2012   The Top 10 CKC Breeds for 2011
The Canadian Kennel Club is pleased to announce the top 10 CKC-registered breeds for 2011. Once again, one of CKC’s “Living Legends” and one of Canada’s indigenous breeds, the Labrador Retriever, which hails from Newfoundland, leads the pack—for the twelfth consecutive year! There is no denying the popularity of this versatile breed from the Sporting Group.

Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in the world and knowing the true tempermant and versitility of this great breed, Labrador Retrievers are now being victimized by unscrupulous people wanting to cash in on their popularity to futher their own financial situations. Capitalizing on the popularity, the Labrador Retriever is being purposely cross-mated with other breeds thereby duping the dog loving public by advertising catch phrases such as new & rare & better & even hypoallergenic.....  Labradoodles and now the Silver, Champagne Etc. ...  Note:  the Cost of these cross bred puppies can be twice or three times the amount of a well bred, well raised Labrador from a very experienced breeder.  The dogs being cross bred are substandard specimens with questionable temperaments, unknown backgrounds and limited health tests.

Buyers Beware:  A Silver coloured Labrador is a crossbred dog, with the introduced dilute grey colour gene from Weimaraners.  The dilute gene is responsible for a variety of health issues not seen in the true labrador population.

SILVER coat color in LABRADORS—Official Statement

There is no genetic basis for the silver gene in Labradors. The silver color is a disqualification under the Standard for the breed. The LRC does not recognize, accept or condone the sale or advertising of any Labrador as a silver Labrador. The Club opposes the practice of registering silver as chocolate.

NEW NEWS: Published Tuesday, July 17, 2012 by the LRC Directors. www.thelabradorclub.com/subpages/show_detail_news.php

The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. is opposed to cross-breeding of dogs and is particularly opposed to the deliberate crossing of Labrador Retrievers with any other breed. These crossbreds are a deliberate attempt to mislead the public with the idea that there is an advantage to these designer dogs. The crossbred dogs are prone to all of the genetic disease of both breeds and offer none of the advantages that owning a purebred dog has to offer.

The gentle, intelligent and family-friendly Labrador Retriever from Canada continues to be the most popular breed in the United States, according to AKC® registration statistics. This versatile hunting breed comes in three colors – yellow, black and chocolate – and because of his aptitude to please his master they excel as guide dogs for the blind, as part of search-and-rescue teams or in narcotics detection with law enforcement.
